Coastwatch Redcar is operational 7 days per week, 365 days a year. Watchkeepers commit to at least 4 hours a week on a rota, working in pairs from the lookout above the Zetland Lifeboat Museum.
Duties include visual observation, VHF radio monitoring, radar awareness, weather recording and official log keeping. We operate with authority from HM Coastguard under MCA criteria.
Volunteers come from all walks of life. Maritime experience is welcome but not essential — full training is given.
Hours
Daylight cover from 8am to 4pm (6pm in summer holidays). Most watchkeepers work one 4-hour shift per week.

1. Visit & apply
Call in or phone the lookout, then submit an application. We will talk through the role and your availability.

2. Shadow a watch
Sit with duty watchkeepers and see observation, radio and logging in practice — hands-on from day one.

3. Train with seniors
Work alongside senior watchkeepers, with extra time spent with our training officer covering MCA criteria.

4. Join the rota
Once competent, take regular shifts in pairs — typically one 4-hour watch each week, 365 days a year.

Do I need maritime experience?
No. Experience is helpful but not essential. Full in-house training is provided — observation, radio, radar awareness and log keeping.
